A Brief History of Flight

Do you know who flew the first airplane? If you do, you probably answered "Orville Wright". Orville and Wilbur Wright were brothers and engineers who did a lot of research about flight before they built their first airplane. On December 17, 1903, they launched their "Flyer" from the beach at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This video shows a later flight of their amazing flying machine.

The Wright brothers' invention was important because their flying contraption with an engine that could transport a person. However, earlier scientists and engineers had designed and even built lots of different balloons, gliders, and models. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has a website which shows pictures of many of these early machines.

  1. That NASA link is interesting. And it led to a Wright Brothers game that is fun (and educational). If anyone is interested I have a Wright Brothers coloring page at one of my posts.
